Observing how traditional work-life balance policies often fail to reflect the diversity of modern caregiving realities, Rocío Romero Rouco set out to redefine what “family” means in organisational life. As Psychologist and HR Manager at AFAMO, she developed Family Redefined — a responsibility-based framework that recognises caregiving beyond parenthood, including the growing emotional and practical responsibilities linked to companion animals 

By shifting from status-based benefits to a caregiving-centred model, she proposes a more equitable and transparent approach to flexibility, leave and wellbeing. Her initiative demonstrates how thoughtful HR leadership can reduce informal absenteeism, strengthen perceptions of fairness and inclusion, and align organisational policies with evolving social realities — all while maintaining operational sustainability.
